AlphaFold and the Revolution in Protein Structure Prediction

AlphaFold represents one of the most significant applications of AI to biology, solving the 50-year-old protein folding problem and demonstrating the transformative potential of deep learning for scientific discovery.

The Protein Folding Problem

Proteins are molecular machines that perform virtually all functions in living cells. Their function depends on their 3D structure, which emerges from the sequence of amino acids.

The challenge: predicting structure from sequence had stumped scientists for decades.
